News from The Mid-Atlantic Equity Center

News from The Mid-Atlantic Equity Center: February is Black History Month! This year's selected theme is "Black Women in American History and Culture." From the American Revolution to the present, African American women have played key roles, enriching both the African American community and the nation at large.

African American women have always moved forward, overcoming many obstacles, to strengthen themselves, their families and their communities. We all know about the accomplishments of prominent women -- from Harriet Tubman and Ida B. Wells to Toni Morrison and Shirley Chisholm. Unsung heroines also play significant roles in their families, churches, sororities, communities, and advocacy groups. These women have been, and continue to be, the core of their communities, however their stories are too little known.

February is an opportunity to tell your students and children the history and stories of the exceptional women you know and remind them how all of our lives have been and are being enriched by their contributions.
