Wheeling kids take immigration reform to high profile lawmakers - chicagotribune.com: Wheeling school kids recently took their proposals for comprehensive immigration reform straight to the top.
Seventh-grade students from Wheeling-based Community Consolidated School District 21 made a presentation on April 4 to Rep. Tammy Duckworth (D-8th), state Sen. Matt Murphy (R-Palatine), state Rep. Elaine Nekritz (D-Des Plaines), Chicago Ald. Joe Moreno (1st) and Greg Bales, who attended for democratic Sen. Dick Durbin.
The Jack London Middle School's immigration reform proposal called it "simply not fair" that, if passed, the federal DREAM Act would require two years of military service or college attendance. The DREAM Act is a proposal to grant legal status to undocumented students who grew up in the United States.
"I was surprised by that," Duckworth said of the kids' ideas. "Their thinking is logical. It has a sound basis, but I don't agree with them."
