VIBE Vixen Black History Month Woman of the Day: Marita Bonner  VIBE Vixen: The Harlem Renaissance was a time of great creativity especially in the areas of art and literature. Marita Bonner (1899-1972), a writer, essayist and playwright, was an African American who brought awareness to black women in society.

During the Renaissance, Bonner focused her writings on issues in Chicago and women barriers. Her first essay, ”On Being Young-A Woman-And Colored” addressed the negative conditions black women encountered and encouraged them to outsmart tough situations. Marita also gained popularity with her famous play ”The Purple Flower,” which addressed black freedom.

Her bravery to write about inequalities during this time will always be remembered.
