Black History Month kick off with stamp dedication at HCC - Roanoke Rapids Daily Herald: News
Black History Month kick off with stamp dedication at HCC - Roanoke Rapids Daily Herald: News: The seventh annual stamp dedication at HCC kicked off Black History Month by highlighting two events that helped change the course of history.
The event, sponsored by Halifax Community College and the U.S. Postal Service, honored the 150th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation and Rosa Parks. It was also the first event in the year-long Lyceum Series.
College President Dr. Ervin Griffin Sr. said Parks, who by sitting down, made America stand up and notice all God’s children had to be treated equal. “She was a bold soldier for the freedoms that we all enjoy today,” he said.
Josephine Reed, QEP coordinator at HCC, presented a brief history of Parks. HCC drama students presented a Rosa Parks skit written and directed by Professor Sharon Askew.
Weldon Postmaster Andrea Green said in 2013, the U.S. Postal Service is launching a new set of civil rights stamps with the two being the first dedicated.
