Minority teacher numbers in Colorado lag growth of state's minority students - The Denver Post

Minority teacher numbers in Colorado lag growth of state's minority students - The Denver Post: Langston Williams had only one black teacher from kindergarten through his senior year in high school.

Williams is not resentful about that fact but said it struck him as odd that during his time at Denver Public Schools, a district with about 83,000 students and more than 5,200 educators, only one teacher looked like him.

"It's always comforting to see a similar face at the front of the classroom for some students," said Williams, who graduated this month from George Washington High School. "It didn't really happen with me, but sometimes it's kind of daunting to have to deal with teachers or to really engage teachers, so seeing someone similar to you, or someone you can relate to, makes it that much easier."
