School District Faces Accusations of Discrimination | KEYT.com - News, Weather, Sports for Santa Barbara, Santa Maria, San Luis Obispo, Ventura, Oxnard | Local: Santa Barbara - The Santa Barbara Unified School District is facing accusations of discrimination against Latino students and is now being investigated by the U.S. Department of Education.
The accusations come from Steve Trubow, a civil rights investigator based in Washington State. He says he filed a complaint with the Department of Education after talking with a friend here in Santa Barbara and after looking at statistics provided by school officials.
According to Trubow, "Latino children get a different kind of message than White children do in the Santa Barbara schools."
During the last academic year, school records show there were a total of 696 male suspensions, 476 were Latino students compared to 166 White students.
For females, Latina students made up 212 of the 257 suspensions. White female students accounted for 24 suspensions.
