Minnie Forbes Owner of the 1956 Detroit Stars Honored by President Obama | WCHB-AM: NewsTalk 1200: (Detroit, MI) The Michigan Chapter of Negro League Baseball Players celebrate one of their members, Minnie Forbes. She is the former owner of the 1956 Detroit Stars Baseball Team. Forbes is credited with being the third woman in the United States to own a team in the Negro Leagues. After 1958, Forbes went on to be the fourth woman to play baseball in the Negro Leagues She was the third basemen for the Kansas City Monarchs.
Louis Manley, Jr is a well-known Detroit historian and the president of The Michigan Chapter of Negro League Baseball. He is excited to be recognized nationally as a leader in Negro League Baseball. As he prepares to meet and greet President Obama on Monday August 5, 2013 at 5:00 pm in the White House, he is delighted to accompany Minnie Forbes.
Manley shares, “Mrs. Forbes is one of our distinguished members. We celebrate her many social strides and contributions as she was a women in a leadership position in an industry dominated by men during the 1950’s. Her being honored nationally as a legend in Negro League Baseball is wonderful, but only half the story. It is remarkable to note that Forbes is also the last living owner of Negro League Baseball Team in the United States.”
